How Gen Z’s Growing Influence is Reshaping the Luxury Travel and Retail Landscape

As the affluence of Gen Z continues to grow, so does its impact on the luxury sector, prompting hospitality, travel, and retail industries to proactively adopt innovative strategies to meet this demographic’s specific needs and desires.

From energy-efficient lighting and water-saving fixtures to the integration of renewable sources, luxury hotels worldwide are now aligning with the eco-conscious values in travel for Gen Z. In recent years, ‘green vacations’, which position hotels as responsible stewards of both luxury and sustainability, have become increasingly popular. These types of holidays reflect the morals of the eco-conscious Gen Z traveler. This theme is expected to grow over the upcoming year as hotels look to offer new initiatives such as organic farms, zero-waste programs, and natural spas to show their environmental credentials.

Similarly, we expect experiential travel to evolve with key trends in 2024. Next-level wellness and eco-retreats are gaining momentum, catering to Gen Z travelers seeking destinations that prioritize mental and physical well-being through activities like yoga and natural treatments. Educational trips are also on the upswing as travelers immerse themselves in workshops and classes for new skill acquisition and eco-education. Additionally, art pop-ups curated by local artists are captivating discerning travelers, offering culturally rich experiences beyond traditional sightseeing. These trends signify a shift towards meaningful and transformative journeys, spearheaded by the Gen Z wanderlust.

Amid the surge in remote work, hotels are revamping spaces to include flexible and visually pleasing workspaces. These areas offer high-speed internet, comfortable seating, and charging stations, embracing the ‘Instagrammable space’ concept with vibrant art and décor. UK examples include London’s The Twenty-Two Mayfair Hotel, catering to the ‘creative and curious,’ and The Hux Hotel in Kensington, known for its distinctive and quirky design.

Gen Z is a generation raised in the digital age, and hotels are leveraging advanced technologies to enhance their younger guest experiences. We anticipate further integration of more sophisticated AI solutions, augmented reality (AR) experiences, and the prevalence of contactless services in the future. Voice-activated assistance will likely become a standard feature, allowing guests to control various aspects of their stay with simple voice commands.

Tech-driven innovations can be summarised by the mantra ‘Tech is Chic.’ High-end brands are increasingly leveraging AI for customer insights, employing data analytics to better understand customer behavior, particularly Gen Z preferences. This data enables luxury retailers to refine marketing strategies, optimize inventory management, and curate personalized shopping experiences. Intelligent automation further enhances personalized service by informing associates about real-time product availability, both in-store and online, and anticipating the scarcity of limited-edition items or exclusive offers.

One brand that has fully immersed itself in the AI realm is Tommy Hilfiger. Its recent AI design challenge encouraged designers to create their own digital wardrobes and enabled winners to see their work produced and monetized, demonstrating the brand’s involvement in the AI world alongside their commitment to upkeep with the latest trends.

Transformative changes have been seen across hospitality, travel and retail industries, impacted by the growing influence of Generation Z. The evolution of eco-friendly practices, aesthetic spaces and AI integration are only a few of the strong trends expected to only gain momentum throughout the next year, particularly in the hotel, travel and fashion sectors.
