Urban regeneration—the idea of revitalizing a deteriorating or forgotten-about area of a city through large-scale residential and commercial development—isn’t a new concept. Projects such as renewing the Puerto Madero neighborhood in Buenos Aires, the Docklands in London, and the Atlanta Beltline date back several decades or more.

The Ellinikon in Athens, Greece, located at the site of the Ellinikon International Airport, which shuttered in 2001, and along the Athenian coast, is among the newest to join the bunch and stands out as the largest urban regeneration in the country’s history. Odisseas Athanasiou, the CEO of Lamda Development, the company behind the Ellinikon, said it’s also one of the largest redevelopment endeavors in Europe.
