Los Angeles has been putting out the welcome mat lately: many of its famed historic hotels have unveiled dramatic renovations, and some new players are opening their doors for the first time. Here are some of Relevance New York’s picks of the city’s finest options for savvy visitors:
The 1927 United Artists building gives the Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles a touch of old Hollywood glamour, but this fashion-forward hotel is thoroughly modern. The hotel has 166 rooms and 16 suites, and its eye-catching interior design by Commune Design features a mural by the Haas Brothers telling the story of Hollywood visually. Self-described “hyper-seasonal” restaurant LA Chapter serves regionally-inspired food on-site. Highlights include a rooftop bar, pool and of course, a screening room.
The 388-room, ultra-chic Line Hotel is the brainchild of the Sydell Group hoteliers, environmental designer Sean Knibb, nightlife mover-shakers Houston Hospitality, and the LA design firm Poketo. The Line is located in Koreatown, and in a nod to the irresistible cuisine of its neighborhood, famed chef Roy Choi runs two restaurants in the hotel: POT, which offers family-style Korean hot pot, and Commissary, which showcases savory vegetarian options.
Not far from the Line, the 94-room Hotel Normandie has just finished a $5-million renovation that has brought the historic hotel back to its 1920’s splendor. LA architects Albert R. Walker and Percy A. Eisen designed the Normandie in 1926. The renovation honors the hotel’s vintage vibe, with modern updates like high-speed internet and flat screens in each room to compliment the classic Spanish-style architecture.
The Hotel Angeleno is an independently owned gem on the Westside, near UCLA and the Getty Museum. Known for its panoramic views from its 17th-floor West Restaurant Lounge, the building itself is circular, making it a groovy neighborhood landmark for those who frequent the 405 Freeway. Its rooms are modern and vibrant, in keeping with the hotel’s distinctive architecture. The Angeleno has an outdoor pool and a restaurant with unbeatable views.
